Public invited to Mahlum Benefit on Sunday

Several Kenmare friends and former KHS classmates have encouraged Bob and Angie Mahlum as the couple has faced Bob’s kidney disease and years of dialysis. Now, with Bob’s recent surgeries, those friends and classmates are stepping up their level of support and sponsoring the Bob and Angie Mahlum Benefit on Sunday, January 16th.

The event is scheduled for 10 am until 2 pm at the Kenmare Memorial Hall. The benefit will begin with a lunch of slushburgers, coleslaw, chips, home-baked bars and beverages, all served for the cost of a freewill donation.

Beginning at 1 pm, guest auctioneer Ray Steen of Donnybrook will start the bidding for a wide variety of over 50 donated items, including a quarter spread of fertilizer, sports memorabilia from the Phoenix Suns and the Minnesota Twins, an access cover for a pickup truck, a Medora package that includes a stay at the Roughrider Hotel, a 4 Bears Casino package, 100 bushels of certified barley seed, half of a butchered elk, a new chainsaw, and much more.

One of the auction highlights will be canola seed, with six numbered caps available to bidders. After the caps are sold, the lucky number for the winner of the seed will be drawn from the six entries and announced.

In addition to the live auction, a bucket drawing will be held for several items. Any number of tickets can be purchased during the event for the bucket drawing and dropped in the bucket or buckets of the buyer’s choice, with the winning tickets pulled and announced.

Raffle tickets related to the benefit have been for sale for weeks and include a grand prize 46” LCD television. Other prizes on the raffle feature a 7-foot freezer filled with meat, three cash prizes and a blanket.

Tickets will be sold that day until the raffle drawing takes place, and are available for purchase the rest of this week at BNC National Bank, State Bank & Trust of Kenmare and Town & Country Credit Union. Winners need not be present to claim their prizes from the Mahlum Benefit raffle.

According to the benefit organizers, donations have been pouring in for the auction and bucket drawings. Many individuals, business and organizations from Kenmare, Mohall, Minot, New Town and Tolley have contributed generously to make the benefit possible. Work by local artists Tami Gravesen, Sharon Inman and Jane Kalmbach will be available, as well as a gift package from Jessica Melin of Dakota Vintage Aprons in Kenmare.

Supplemental funds will be provided by Renville/North Ward Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

For persons who cannot attend Sunday’s benefit but still want to assist the Mahlums, contributions can be made at any of the several Kenmare businesses that have jars set out to collect donations for the cause. Contributions can also be made to the Bob & Angie Mahlum account established at BNC National Bank, P.O. Box 786, Kenmare, ND 58746.

While many of Bob’s actual medical expenses are covered by insurance, organizers of this benefit hope to defray the couple’s expenses related to travel, additional medical costs and time taken away from their jobs. They also want to support the Mahlums in raising awareness about organ donation, and will provide a variety of information about organ donation during the benefit for anyone who is interested.

Everyone is welcome to attend this benefit as the Kenmare community joins together to have a little fun and support a worthwhile cause!
