Most of you have made your New Year’s resolutions already and perhaps you resolved to “get fit,” learn something new, or just enjoy life more.

Here is a great idea to kick start your resolutions--Let’s Go Snowshoeing!

On Saturday, January 29, at 2 pm the Des Lacs National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a Snowshoeing Program that will allow you to learn snowshoeing fundamentals and the history of snowshoes. Kids and adults are welcome.

Once some of the “basics” are covered, we will venture out on the snow-covered prairie and search for signs of wildlife while discussing adaptations wildlife use to survive the North Dakota winters.

Snowshoes provided

You are welcome to bring your own snowshoes, or borrow a pair of ours.

Be sure to dress in layers so you can shed a layer when you feel hot. Wear warm socks and waterproof boots if you have them.

It is also a good idea to bring water to keep hydrated. You will sweat when you snowshoe, so you need to replenish your body with liquid.

Most important, don’t forget your camera. Snowshoeing on the refuge, especially if this is your first time, is sure to be a memorable experience you will want to capture for your photo albums!

When the hike concludes, warm up with some hot chocolate and homemade cookies at refuge headquarters. We can talk more about what we’ve seen that afternoon and about future programs you’d like the Des Lacs NWR to offer.

In case of inclement weather, the snowshoeing program will be postponed until Sunday, January 30.

There is no fee for the program or for using the refuge’s snowshoes, but space is limited for this activity. Please call Jennifer Jewett to register for the program at 701-385-4046, ext. 221. Be sure to leave a message if she is unavailable to speak directly with you.
