Opening week enrollment at Kenmare Elementary School, with 165 students, is the highest seen since the first day of school in August 2000, when 166 kids filled the desks in grades kindergarten through six.

The 2010 number is also 13 students higher than last year’s opening day total of 152 elementary kids.

Total enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year at Kenmare Public School is 287 students, compared with 274 when the doors opened last year.

The current sixth grade class is the largest in the district with 29 students, including two newcomers this year.

The 27 students who make up the kindergarten class have been divided between two instructors. Two classrooms have also been created to accommodate the 25 first graders.

Nine elementary students who are new to the school district are attending classes, including four in first grade.

Junior high enrollment dropped to 35 kids as the district’s smallest class moved to seventh grade. That group of 14 students was joined by one newcomer.

Two other new students registered at Kenmare High School, which listed 122 students in grades 7-12. The freshmen class boasts the strongest numbers at the secondary level, with 28 students.

The Class of 2011 has 22 students earning their final credits toward graduation next May.
