Kenmare Area Community Foundation meets $10,000 fund-raising goal for 2010
In less than two years, the Kenmare Area Community Foundation has more than doubled in size from an initial $25,000 donated by the Kenmare Veteran’s Club, Inc. and the Kenmare Community Development Corporation, to $53,180.

In less than two years, the Kenmare Area Community Foundation has more than doubled in size from an initial $25,000 donated by the Kenmare Veteran’s Club, Inc. and the Kenmare Community Development Corporation, to $53,180.
That new total means the KACF has more money to give away in support of Kenmare-area projects and more opportunities to leverage funds from the North Dakota Community Foundation.
“We reached our goal of raising $10,000 in 2010,” said KACF advisory committee member Bryan Quigley. “This was matched dollar for dollar by the North Dakota Community Foundation.”
Quigley and the rest of the advisory committee have set their sights higher for 2011, because if the group can raise $25,000, the North Dakota Community Foundation will add $15,000 to the local endowment. “It’s a way for them to encourage communities to build their funds,” Quigley said.
Income from the KACF fund is used by the local advisory committee to support a variety of needs and projects in Kenmare and the surrounding area. The KACF made its first grant awards during the summer of 2010, with gifts of $300 each to the Kenmare Public School, the Scenic Walking Trail project, the Donnybrook Community Center and the Pioneer Village.
This year, the local foundation will have just over $2100 to grant, as approved by the advisory committee. Applications for the funds can be made online at www.ndcf.net/Kenmare/Index.asp, where a link to the application form and grant guidelines is located. The deadline for completed applications is June 15th of each year.
“It’s a very simple process,” Quigley said, “and the local advisory board decides who gets the grants, even though this is run through the North Dakota Community Foundation website.”
He invited persons interested in contributing to the Kenmare Area endowment to contact him or one of the advisory board members, including Jayette Young, Kathy Schumacher, Al Scherbenske or Allen Essler. “Or, if you feel more comfortable working with the larger Foundation, then contact the North Dakota Community Foundation in Bismarck,” he said, “and you can designate your contribution to the Kenmare endowment fund.”
Donations from individuals, families, corporations and organizations are pooled into the KACF, which can accept virtually any type of stock, real property or cash. Tax advantages are also possible for donating appreciated assets.
The KACF is one of 42 community funds managed by the North Dakota Community Foundation, with the local advisory committee charged with raising money and then giving it away. “We’re sending out a mailing and contacting potential donors to discuss potential gifts,” Quigley said about the committee’s next steps. “We’re planting seeds in the community.”
He laughed and continued, “We’re low-pressure fund-raisers! But our goal is to build up the fund to a substantial amount to help area projects get off the ground.”
